hello!
My name is Khayli. I'm currently a college student with a major in Communication Studies and two minors in Africa & African Diaspora Studies and Applied Psychology & Human Development. I'm an active member of my school’s only R&B and Soul A capella group as one of our music directors and public relations coordinators. I am apart of a council at my school dedicated to fighting racism and discrimination through education as well.
Throughout high school I was a "hardcore" theater kid, and was apart of a bunch of shows. My favorite production being Hairspray because I got to play the amazing Motormouth Maybelle (portrayed by Queen Latifah in the film). Going to a predominantly white high school and being involved in predominantly white activities I never took the time to think about what it means to be a Black person in these spaces and in America. During Hairspray I started bringing these questions to the forefront of my mind and they've sparked my studies in school and passions in life.
After taking nine years of Mandarin, I had the opportunity to study abroad in China during the Summer of 2017 which fostered my appreciation for exploration and cultural education. This year, after working as a preschool teaching assistant, I went on a service and immersion trip to the Dominican Republic. For ten days a group of 20 or so students and I visited various schools in different cities learning about the country's education system. The opportunity was unbelievable and uncovered my interest in working for and with children.
Over the past few years I’ve cultivated a great love of insightful relationships, music ( I spend hours perfecting my Spotify playlists) and spirituality ( I’ve started a little crystal collection that I’m pretty proud of). I love life and exploring the many stories within it and I'm excited to be using this website as a means to do so.
